Utility Software
In any computer, whether you use it for work or pleasure, there will always be utility software installed on it. In fact, the first operating systems of computers have always had utility software installed on them. And today’s major operating systems, such as Windows and Macintosh, have utility software as well.
But what exactly is PC utility software? You may have heard of such software from its other names. You see, computer utility software is actually known as service routine, service program, or utility routine as well. Utility software is actually smaller in terms of size and use when compared to applications software. You see, utility software is primarily designed to manage and keep in mint condition different parts of the computer. These parts include the computer hardware, the operating system, and the application software found on your PC as well. Any utility software is also capable of performing a single task, or a small group of simple tasks. This is not the purpose for application software at all. Application software has a lot of tasks to complete. This is then the reason why application software usually come in software suites.
So, what are some examples of software utilities? And is there such things as free software utilities? One example would be the disk defragmenter. Disk defragmenters are actually used in the detection of certain computer files stored on the hard disk of your PC. Just what kind of files are they out for? The disk defragmenter actually looks for computer files whose contents have disjointed fragments all over. This means that the files are not in their entirety. Disk defragmenters find these files and they join the fragments again, so that the files would be in their entirety once more. The efficiency of your computer would be enhanced as well. Along with disk defragmenters come disk checker scans, which primarily scan the different areas of your hard drive. The scanning is for detecting files that have defragmented portions. What causes files to become defragmented? A common cause of this is that the saving process of the file was not correct. Another cause for this could be bad burning.
Another example of a disk defragmenter is the disk cleaner utility software. This piece of software is used in finding files and applications that are not really necessary to the basic operation and functioning of your computer. This is an important utility software to have because these unnecessary components of your PC do take up space. And if you have a lot of such files and applications, a significant amount of your computer’s memory would be used in vain. This memory could very well be used by more important applications and files. The disk cleaner finds such files then prods you as to whether or not you want to delete the detected files.
A virus scanner is also an example of utility software. Now, this is indeed one important utility software you should have on your PC. Virus scanners have one primary purpose, and that is to detect computer viruses that just might be lurking in your PC. You can never know for sure whether or not a file or application in your PC has already been infected with a computer virus. And computer viruses are not something that can be just ignored. This is because computer viruses can cause much damage to your files, your hard drives, and your whole computer ultimately.
Another example of utility software is the disk compression software. With this utility software, you can actually compress the contents of your hard drive, so that there would be more space for other files and applications.
These are just some examples of common utility software used by a lot of people worldwide. There are so many more software utilities that serve important purposes.
