DVD Software

The entertainment media has gone through several significant changes before it went on to welcome one drastic development – the DVD. Without a doubt, the Digital Video Disc or DVD has earned the recognition as the most sought-after video storage media. So while the physical aspects of the DVD do not differ from the Video Compact Disc or VCD, its storage capacity continues to be powerful and unmatched.

DVDs come in either of two formats, namely the “plus” and the “dash” or “minus” format. DVD+RW, DVD+R DL, and DVD=R are under the “plus” format. The “minus” format on the other hand, consists of the DVD-RW and DVD-R.

DVD software involved in reading, burning, or protecting against data piracy is rather complicated. However, this works well for the industry and offers more benefits than any other media software. For instance, DVD copying is regulated while VCD copying is not. This feature in DVD software has made the DVD the most ideal media available.

The DVD software prevents disc-to-disc reproductions of copyrighted materials, such as audio albums and movies. This “safety” feature is possible because the DVD-Audio and DVD-Video discs are safeguarded by a software known as Content Scrambling System or CSS, and another software called the Content Protection for Pre-recorded Media or CPPM.

In addition, a special DVD software is necessary to read the data contained therein. Licensed playback systems allow decryption of DVDs. DVD drives in most computers nowadays have either the Regional Playback Control 1 or Regional Playback Control 2. The RPC enforces the restrictions on playing the DVD from various regions in the world. It speaks about the geographical location or the place where the DVD may be played. The market is home to several types of DVD player software, mostly being able to play VCD, DVD, and even MPEG movies. There are also some who can play other multimedia files and video formats.

Copying DVD movies and audio is not impossible. Even if DVDs are known to be highly protected, the latest technology still allows people to make DVD copies using DVD copy software.

For those who want to collect videos, audio, subtitles, and menus into a DVD that is playable, they would need a DVD burning software. This process, known as DVD authoring, involves a wide range of authoring programs according to various budgets and skills. There are two different types of DVD authoring software available – the consumer type and the professional type. Beginners and those who intend to create menus for personal use can benefit from the consumer type. However, for professionals and those with advanced skills, the professional authoring software comes with greater advantages.

But even if DVD software is designed to work against piracy and production of illegal copies, the presence of illegitimate DVD ripping software continues make this goal very hard to achieve. And despite various copyright laws that prohibit the sale and release of DVD software that serves to bypass copy protection, hundreds of companies are still making these software products highly available.

DVD ripping software has now threatened the music and video industry because it can be easily bought, and in certain cases, can be downloaded for free online. Some critics have given up and consider this as a useless battle. However, according to some people, Hollywood will continue the legal fight to stop this “ripping off”.

So while some of us benefit from the easy and convenient DVD copying software, we are actually ripping off the entertainment industry its due profit. Thus, next time we make illegal copies of DVD audio and movies, let us stop and think if the benefits really outweigh the disadvantages.
